At the end of August, the Logistics Alliance Germany (LAG) traveled to Latvia and Estonia for the first time. The delegation trip was joined by a number of companies and associations from across the German logistics industry and was led by Steffen Bilger Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and Coordinator of the Federal Government for Freight Transport and Logistics.

The multifaceted program focused on rail freight transport, the Rail Baltica project in particular, as well as the maritime industry and combined transport. In addition, meetings were held with associations and terminal operators as well as with employees of the Ministry of Transport and members of the local chambers of commerce.

The trip’s first stop was the Latvian capital, Riga. A focus of the discussions held there was the logistics-related challenges and development potential of Latvia. The Riga visit also provided the opportunity for exchanging information on the transnational railway project Rail Baltica. A significant outcome of these discussions was the realization that there is a major need for rail freight transport in Latvia.

The second and final stage of the trip took the delegation to the Estonian capital of Tallinn. Talks were held with various representatives from Estonia’s economic and logistics sectors, providing the LAG delegation with numerous insights into the country’s economic situation. In Tallinn, the digitalization capital of Europe, the delegation members met with startup founders from Estonia’s Silicon Valley, gained insights into the future of technology and learned from the innovative IT approaches being applied there for logistics solutions. Finally, a tour of the Port of Tallinn and a discussion with its operators gave insight into the significant development potential there and provided inspiration for opportunities for cooperation.

As a result of the delegation’s visit to the Baltic region, the goal of consolidating intra-European logistics networks and opening up new markets was met with great success.
